Art Sessions: Using materials found in the forest, we will create artwork that reflects the beauty of nature and the spirit of the natural world. Classroom in the Parkland: We have built an outdoor space beside the River Esk among beautiful parkland where we can meet to learn about our environment and practise the skills of woodcraft. Building Forest Shelters: Every child's ambition: to build a secret den in the woods! We will learn how to do this using the resources of the woodland to create a safe, warm shelter using renewable resources. Storytelling and Creative Writing: How many fairy tales relate to the woods? Like our distant ancestors, we will create forest stories to tell our children, with separate classes for different age groups. About Access to Industry: View photos of previous CSI Groups Declaration Of Arbroath Short CourseThis one-day history course considers the Declaration of Arbroath and its links to Newbattle Abbey. The most famous of all Scottish documents and the model for America’s Declaration of Independence, the Declaration of Arbroath, is closely associated with the beautiful and historic Newbattle Abbey, as it was here -- and not in Arbroath -- that a gathering of venerable Scots nobles held discussions and drafted the letter to Pope John XXII, that was subsequently sent to the Abbot of Arbroath, the King's Chancellor, in 1320. The Vatican's decision to ex-communicate all Scots after the rout, by Robert the Bruce of the English at Bannockburn in 1314 and recapture of Berwick in 1319, angered the nobles who asserted their right of self determination . . .but what is the rest of the story. Contemporary StorytellingTheory and Practice New course to be launched at Newbattle Abbey College in partnership with The Scottish Storytelling Centre. This autumn we are launching a pioneering new storytelling qualification in partnership with the Scottish Storytelling Centre. Contemporary Storytelling: Theory and Practice is a unique course combining two residential weekends at Newbattle, with a personal project between them. It is designed for storytellers in professions as well as professional storytellers and leads to a Professional Development Qualification (SQA Level 7) recognised by all academic institutions and professional associations. Traditionally, the art of oral storytelling has been recognised as significant both culturally and educationally. In contemporary society however, the mass media have led to a shift of emphasis away from a book led culture which has in turn highlighted the importance of oral communication. This unit will help professionals rediscover the art of oral storytelling and use storytelling skills to enhance their professional practice. Professionals who could use this unit to support Continuing Professional Development include teachers, librarians, literacy workers, museum and heritage interpreters, health professionals, clergy, youth workers, environmental rangers, community development professionals and arts animateurs. The course combines theoretical perspectives on how oral storytelling works as an effective form of communication, with practical experience of how it is applied in specific professional contexts. Outcomes relate to the skills involved in delivering effective narrative communication in specific situations, relating to professional practice, including: Analysing the purposes and relevance of oral storytelling First residential weekend: Friday 26th September (eve) to Sunday 28th September (aft) 2008 Second residential weekend: Friday 15th May (eve) to Sunday 17th May (aft) 2009 (Non-residential option available) Between these weekends, participants will engage in distance learning as they complete their personal project. The course will be nationally validated by SQA (Level 7 on the SCQF framework).
